The Lions Club of Cronulla was chartered in 1965, and over the years we have established a reputation as a leader in fundraising for charitable causes, not only in the Sutherland Shire, but also in the wider community.
Our contributions to the welfare of the local community have been many and varied, ranging from the partial painting of a small cottage for a single abandoned mother to the purchase of medical facilities for our local hospital and large scale donations to the Children’s Hospital at Randwick.
Lions is headquartered in Chicago, USA and from there many outstanding International Service projects are directed, and millions of dollars distributed. Health activities; agricultural schemes; educational improvements; medical research; aid to the homeless, aged and infirm – the list is endless.
In Australia, we have a national Council of Governors from 20 Lion Districts who coordinate national projects – Drug Awareness; Hearing Dogs; Medical Research; … The Australian Lions Foundation provides funds for prompt relief of national disasters – local bushfire victims had financial help within days of their loss.
Lions has given financial and practical assistance to many, including:-
Victims of the Maitland floods in the 50’s – an entire suburb was rebuilt on higher ground. Wollongong flood victims; Cyclone Tracy – Lions coordinated the rehousing of victims; Lions Cord Blood Research Laboratory – a world-class research facility to find a cure for childhood leukaemia; Ophthalmic research funding – especially in the area of corneal implants; The Bionic Ear Development; New Britain tidal wave damage – assistance in many forms for the local people; Australian Children’s Mobility Foundation,
In conjunction with the Spastic Centre, provides mobility aids; Cancer Research – particularly cancer of the prostate and the cervix; International aid to less developed countries.
